The Rev. Robert F. Griffin, C.S.C., Award was established by the Alumni Board in 2003 to recognize outstanding accomplishments or achievements in writing.

2013 Recipient

For his outstanding work in the field of journalism and writing, Bryan Gruley ’79 is recognized with this award.

Gruley, a graduate of the American Studies program at Notre Dame, is a reporter-at-large for Bloomberg News and Businessweek magazine. He was previously a reporter, editor, and the Chicago bureau chief for The Wall Street Journal, where he shared a Pulitzer Prize for coverage of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

He is the award-winning author of three novels, Starvation Lake, The Hanging Tree, and The Skeleton Box. Gruley plays ice hockey and guitar and is expecting his first grandchild with his wife, Pam ’79 S.M.C. They live in Chicago.

He responds:

I am honored and humbled to be chosen for the Griffin Award by the Alumni Association.

It’s quite an honor to be listed along with writers such as Barry Lopez and my longtime friend Brian Doyle.

And it is humbling to recall all the great teachers and fellow students who encouraged me to write during my years at Notre Dame, especially professors Bill Krier, Ron Weber, and Tom Werge. I was also fortunate to have mentors such as John Monczunski at Notre Dame Magazine. Thanks to the Alumni Association for recognizing my work. Go Irish!
