Fourth Sunday of Easter
Jn 10:11-18
Listen to the Audio Version

Jesus said:
“I am the good shepherd.
A good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.
A hired man, who is not a shepherd and whose sheep are not his own, sees a wolf coming and leaves the sheep and runs away, and the wolf catches and scatters them.
This is because he works for pay and has no concern for the sheep.
I am the good shepherd, and I know mine and mine know me,
just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I will lay down my life for the sheep.
I have other sheep that do not belong to this fold. These also I must lead, and they will hear my voice, and there will be one flock, one shepherd.
This is why the Father loves me, because I lay down my life in order to take it up again.
No one takes it from me, but I lay it down on my own. I have power to lay it down, and power to take it up again. This command I have received from my Father.”

While I claim no expert knowledge when it comes to sheep, I did find myself relating to Jesus in his role as the Good Shepherd in today’s gospel. As a mother of five, much of my time and energy is spent feeding, corralling, re-directing, and transporting my children. Before one sports season ends, another has begun: piano lessons, doctor’s appointments, and playdates. I pride myself on managing the schedule and getting everyone where they need to be. I am a good shepherd!! (And did I mention humble too?)

But wait! Jesus doesn’t simply ferry his followers from one place to another, making sure they show up to Bethany or Galilee as scheduled. He leads, guides, and shows them (and us) the way to eternal life, ultimately laying down his life for his sheep. I wonder: am I doing the same for those I am called to shepherd?

I am so grateful that God has entrusted my husband and me with our family. And I am grateful for these busy times of learning and discerning the unique gifts he has given to each of our children. I pray that, like Jesus the Good Shepherd, I am willing to show them the way by laying down my life, literally if ever called to, but also less dramatically, by laying down the tasks and calendars that can sometimes feel like the driving force of our days and instead direct them towards ways to grow in holiness.

During this Easter season, may we all find ways to follow the Good Shepherd more closely and to help guide those we love to do the same.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, you have given Jesus authority over all your creatures, over each one of us. He exercises his authority by having become one with us in our flesh and blood, in our struggles and hopes. Help us to be so closely united with Jesus that our truest selves will be molded in Jesus’ likeness. Amen.
