The eleven disciples went to Galilee,
to the mountain to which Jesus had ordered them.
When they all saw him, they worshiped, but they doubted.
Then Jesus approached and said to them,
“All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me.
Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations,
baptizing them in the name of the Father,
and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,
teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.
And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.”
Do you ever doubt Jesus? I admittedly do, but I’m sure I’m not alone. We can see so clearly how God works in the lives of others and blesses those close to us, but we often doubt that God can—or will—do the same for us.
“They saw him, they worshiped, but they doubted.” We go to Mass, but do we believe Jesus is truly present in the Eucharist? As Catholics, we are supposed to. We say the creed every week that we believe Jesus is present: body, blood, soul, and divinity. We receive Jesus in the Eucharist and worship him in Mass, so why do we doubt him just like the apostles did over 2,000 years ago?
I sometimes doubt what God wants for me in my vocation as a husband and father. As I navigate transitions in my life, professionally and personally, I have asked God, “Lord, what do you want from me?” The answer nearly every time is for me to go home and love my family. I often desire to do grander things (at least in my estimation), but instead, God keeps calling me to love my wife, be patient with my children, and be compassionate towards those I work with.
God works in hidden, simple, quiet moments. He’s asking you to take the next step toward him, which might be surprisingly small. It could be something as mundane as putting your phone down and playing catch with your child, helping around the house without complaining, or avoiding gossip at work. It is by taking those small steps each day toward him that we will find ourselves walking the path on which God has called us.
Today, let us see God, worship, and believe.
Prayer
God of wisdom and truth, you reveal to people of faith your oneness amid the diversity and uniqueness in the world around us. Make yourself known to us and to all people, as the one God, living and true. Affirm your truth in our lives so that we may be witnesses of your unchanging presence. May your declared truth in the life and teachings of your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, be our salvation and guide. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
