Friday of the Third Week of Lent

Episode 8

Notre Dame Liturgical Choir – The University of Notre Dame Liturgical Choir is composed of approximately 70 undergraduate and graduate student singers and sings at the 10 A.M. Sunday Mass in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart.

During this season of Lent, we turn our attention to Jesus’s sacrifice for the sake of our salvation. As we prepare to celebrate the mysteries of his death and resurrection, we remember that he is, as the title of this song indicates, our “saving victim.” The disciplines of Lent encourage us to walk the narrow path of self sacrifice but we know that Jesus’ sacrifice “expands the doors of heaven” for us.

(Lyrics)

Latin

O salutaris Hostia,
Quae caeli pandis ostium:
Bella premunt hostilia,
Da robur, fer auxilium.
Uni trinoque Domino
Sit sempiterna gloria,
Qui vitam sine termino
Nobis donet in patria.
Amen.

English

O, Saving Victim,
who expandest the door of heaven,
hostile armies press,
give strength; bear aid.
To the One and Triune Lord,
may there be everlasting glory;
may he who gives life without end
to us give in our homeland.
Amen.
