FULL TEXT:
Next Sunday’s Gospel tells of the Transfiguration, when “Jesus took Peter, James, and John and led them up a high mountain apart by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his clothes became dazzling white.”
We begin this week’s depictions of this scene with a sketch from Ivan Mestrovic, the famous Croatian artist who lived and taught at Notre Dame for the last seven years of his life. Notice how Jesus is shown here—one hand stretches beyond the bounds of the image and the other reaches for a disciple. It’s almost as if he’s pulling them up with him to heaven.
Jesus’ transfiguration is a revelation of the glory that awaits him after the cross. It is our destiny, too. How might we welcome the Lord today, who came to transfigure us to share in his glory?
