Wednesday of the Second Week of Lent

Episode 15

AUDIO MEDITATION:

Henri-Jean Guillaume Martin (French, 1860-1943), The Christ and the Samaritan. Public domain.

FULL TEXT:

The Samaritan woman doesn’t understand why Jesus would be speaking to her, asking her for water, but Jesus replies, “If you knew the gift of God and who is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.”

In this painting, Henri Martin shows Jesus speaking to the woman, but there is no well. Jesus, himself, is the well, and soon the woman will abandon her jar because she has drawn from the living water he offers her.

When do we seek to fill ourselves from wells that don’t hold living water? This Lent, how might we turn to Jesus as a well of living water instead?
