Memorial of Saints Joachim and Anne, Parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Mt 13:31-35
Listen to the Audio Version

Jesus proposed a parable to the crowds.
“The Kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed
that a person took and sowed in a field.
It is the smallest of all the seeds,
yet when full-grown it is the largest of plants.
It becomes a large bush,
and the birds of the sky come and dwell in its branches.”

He spoke to them another parable.
“The Kingdom of heaven is like yeast
that a woman took and mixed with three measures of wheat flour
until the whole batch was leavened.”

All these things Jesus spoke to the crowds in parables.
He spoke to them only in parables,
to fulfill what had been said through the prophet:

I will open my mouth in parables,
I will announce what has lain hidden from the foundation of the world.

My young daughter was quietly crying because she believed a junior high teacher had unfairly disciplined her and other classmates. She was confused, overwhelmed, and had come to me during a classroom break while I was working in another part of the school.

She was likely justified in her belief, but I knew there was no reasoning or explanation that would help at that moment. Instead, I suggested we walk about the parking lot and pray a decade of the rosary, asking Mother Mary for comfort. My daughter calmed down during this walk and eventually returned to the classroom.

I promptly moved on from this encounter and never thought about it again. Fifteen years later, my daughter sent me an article she wrote about this experience and the deep impression it made on her faith journey. I had no idea.

The mustard seed is the “smallest of seeds” and yet becomes the largest of plants.

We don’t know how the smallest of actions may ripple through someone else’s life: a heartfelt smile, a word of encouragement, an act of prayer, kindness, or thanksgiving. St. Thérèse of Lisieux reminds us, “Remember that nothing is small in the eyes of God. Do all that you do with love.” These smallest of actions, exercised in love, may be exactly what is needed to complete God’s plan of bringing the kingdom of heaven to us.

In my daughter’s case, she is a beautiful young woman, a graduate of Notre Dame, a loving wife, a mother of three precious girls, and someone working full-time to protect life and advocate for human dignity at the Women’s Care Center. A mustard seed of prayer and love in a school parking lot grew into a vocation in which “birds of the sky come and dwell in its branches.”

Prayer

Rev. Steve Gibson, C.S.C.

Dear Lord, when time drags on and prayers go unanswered; when our hard work seems so futile; when we wonder what difference we’re making, remind us of the mustard seed. Though it appears so insignificant, so incapable of bringing forth life, we know it finds its purpose and serves magnificently. Bless us with great possibilities and increase our faith in your presence in all we do. Amen.

Saint of the Day

Sts. Anne and Joachim

Sts. Anne and Joachim were the parents of Mary and are patron saints of grandparents.

We do not know much about Joachim and Anne—even their names have been handed on to us by tradition. The stories that have come down to us tell that they were likely well-off, and had been childless for most of their marriage. An angel appeared to them both to announce a birth in their old age, and Anne promised to dedicate the child to the service of God. Mary was their only child, and they presented her at the Temple when she was 3 years old, prefiguring the presentation of Jesus.

Though we know little about these people, the Church holds the parents of Mary in great esteem because they were the ones who taught her the faithfulness that she demonstrated in accepting God’s invitation to bear Jesus to the world.

Anne and Joachim are depicted in the Basilica in several places, including many wall murals that depict the life of Mary. They are shown here in this stained glass window from the Basilica, and their relics rest in the reliquary chapel there—including a piece from their house where they raised Mary.

Sts. Anne and Joachim, patron saints of grandparents—pray for us!
