Noël Coypel (French, 1628–1707), Resurrection of Christ, ca. 1700, oil on canvas. Snite Museum of Art, University of Notre Dame: Gift of Mrs. J.C. Bowes, 1957.062.
FULL TEXT:
In today’s Gospel, we hear how the two Marys ran from the tomb to share the good news of the resurrection. The guards who were standing watch also share the same news with the religious leaders, who bribe the soldiers to report that Jesus’ body was stolen by his followers.
The resurrection turns earthly power upside down, and this image shows the soldiers in tumult—cast down and fleeing. The two women receive the news, however, with wonder and curiosity at this new thing that God is doing.
How might we place more of our trust today in the resurrected Lord rather than in earthly powers?
