Good Friday

Episode 17

During the season of Lent, FaithND will provide meditations on this season of preparation through musical offerings from the many Notre Dame choirs and sacred music ensembles. Songs will be featured on Ash Wednesday, each Tuesday and Saturday of Lent, and every day of Holy Week through the Octave of Easter.

Notre Dame Children’s Choir – The Children’s Choir, along with its satellite community choirs, educates over 300 singers–from birth through high school–in music literacy, vocal training, and choral music, every week. They are dedicated to the revitalization of sacred music in the community, regularly singing in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart and throughout the greater South Bend-Michiana area.

On this Good Friday, let us turn to the Constitutions of Holy Cross–the rule of life and guiding principles for the community that founded the University of Notre Dame–for inspiration and insight into the event of the cross: “Jesus entered into the pain and death that sin inflicts. He accepted the torment but gave us joy in return. We whom He has sent to minister amid the same sin and pain must know that we too shall find the cross and the hope it promises. The face of every human being who suffers is for us the face of Jesus who mounted the cross to take the sting out of death. Ours must be the same cross and the same hope.” Constitution 8, section 114

(Lyrics)

Latin

O Crux ave, spes unica,
hoc Passionis tempore!
piis adauge gratiam,
reisque dele crimina.

English

O hail the cross our only hope
in this passiontide
grant increase of grace to believers
and remove the sins of the guilty.
