Mount of Beatitudes

The Mount of Beatitudes is a place on the northern shores of the Sea of Galilee where pilgrims gather to remember Jesus teaching the beatitudes. It is close to Tabgha and Capernaum—you can locate it on this map.

This church was built in 1938 near the site of one built here in the 300s to commemorate the Sermon on the Mount, where Jesus delivers the beatitudes. The modern church has eight sides to represent the eight beatitudes. A guest house and the chapel is staffed by Franciscan Missionary Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

There is little archeological value here—no one claims that this is the exact place where Jesus taught his followers, but it is in the general area, and gives one the perspective of what it might have looked like. Several streams flow into the Sea of Galilee in this area, and there are a number of trees. It is easy to imagine Jesus seeking out a place like this for its beauty and shade.

From this vantage point, pilgrims can see nearly all the places Jesus visited and taught during his public ministry. This video takes you to the Mount of Beatitudes for one minute of quiet prayer:
