Several saints this past week were tortured or martyred in the persecutions that began under the Roman Emperor Decius around the year 250. St. Ammonius is another.

He was a Roman soldier who, with a friend, supported Christians during the persecution by hiring them for work. Both friends were arrested and condemned to work in the mines of Bithynia, where they died.
